Once again, Rob couldn’t focus. It was becoming a common occurrence since he’d met Payne, although he had to admit that things had settled down over the past few weeks. He had a hard time believing he’d been living with the assassins for almost three months now and that he’d known Payne for two and a half months.

They were taking things slowly, but it felt right. Rob had been panicking that he’d mess things up and send Payne running, but Payne wasn’t going anywhere so far. It was kind of surprising—a relief—but it also worried Rob. Payne was extremely patient with him, but eventually, he’d get annoyed. Rob didn’t want to push him all the way there, but he wasn’t sure what to do to avoid it. He wanted to do something nice for Payne, but he had no idea where to start.

That was why he didn’t have relationships. He had no idea how to deal with them.

He scrolled down his phone, trying to find something he and Payne could do. He’d done nothing more than typing romantic dates in the browser, but he couldn’t find anything he felt would fit him and Payne.

A dinner date night? That sounded boring, and since the website suggested doing it at home, it would also be awkward with everyone else there.

A comedy show? Rob found them irritating, and more often than not, he didn’t laugh at the same things the others laughed at.

Getting a couples’ tattoo? Just the thought made Rob shudder in horror. He didn’t care what others did with their bodies, but he didn’t like needles, not even needles he could barely see. He’d tried getting a tattoo once when he was younger, and he’d fainted when the artist had started the machine.

Plan a weekend away? That wouldn’t be possible between Rob’s work and Payne’s training.

Wine tasting tour? That was out, since Payne was only twenty. Rent a rowboat? Unless they both wanted to drown, it was better not to do that.

Rob groaned and dropped his forehead to his desk. How was he supposed to show Payne he cared when he had no idea how to do it?

“I’m pretty sure you still need that brain,” Jasper said from the open infirmary door.

The door was always open in case someone needed help, but since Rob had arrived, he’d only seen a few occurrences. Even when the assassins went on missions, they tended to come back unharmed and in one piece. It was impressive and a sign that they were good at their jobs, something Rob tried not to think too much about.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, turning his chair around so he could look at Jasper. “Did we have an appointment I forgot about?”

Jasper walked into the infirmary, shaking his head. “No. I just wanted to see you.”

Rob blinked. “Why?”

Jasper cocked his head. “Because we’re friends?”

“We are?” Rob supposed they were, in a way, even though they’d started as a patient-doctor relationship. Not that Rob was a real doctor, at least not one of those who worked in hospitals.
